Carrier IQ unveils tool operators can use to open up about data collected from your phone
Carrier IQ cares. Or, rather, for Carrier IQ, it's all about care. The much-maligned California analytics company has weathered the Great Privacy Scandal of 2011 and today at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona announced a new product for its customers -- the operators -- to give greater transparency to consumers -- that's you and me -- regarding data being collected from your smartphones and tablets.
Let's be clear here: You are not Carrier IQ's customer. It provides network and hardware analytics capabilities to companies that sell smartphones by the millions, not folks like you and me who buy them every year or so (or, in our case, more often). That's not to say that CIQ is deaf to the recent surge in the push for privacy. Far from it. And that's not to say it hasn't learned a thing or two since everybody started to care about on-board analytics. It most certainly has.
And that brings us to today's announcement.
Dubbed the "Customer Experience Dashboard," CIQ will begin offering -- again, to operators, not to end-users directly -- tools that the operators can then use to show their users basic fault explanations. Is your phone's battery draining? Dropping a lot of calls? Constantly rebooting? CIQ's new tools would all the operator to better explain to you what's going on with your phone, as well as with the network it's on. CIQ would essentially provide APIs to the operators, who then could build into their own websites the ability to see exactly what's going on with your phone.
It's a twofold proposition. At its core, the idea is to place some of the customer care onus back onto the customer, specifically to cut down on customer care phone calls. In other words, to help you help yourself. That, in turn, saves the operator money. It's also a great opportunity for the operator to show exactly what sort of data it's harvesting from your phone. But -- and this is a pretty big "but" -- it's up to the operator to implement any or all of this. As with Carrier IQ's current suite of products, it's completely customizable to for each operator and platform. It doesn't (and probably wouldn't) look like what you see in the picture above. Operators would be free to customize and present as much data as it sees fit, and in whatever manner it sees fit. And as of right now, it's still completely optional (and in fact will raise the cost of the CIQ platform for the operator).
For our part, we believe that would be money well spent by the operators. As much as the operators need analytics, the end-users need greater transparency. And done right (there's always a catch, right?), the operators could conceivably kill two birds with one stone here: continue to learn about the devices it supports in a real-time manner, and do so in a way that doesn't scare the hell out of its users.

Google reportedly (and unsurprisingly) picks Dennis Woodside to replace Sanjay Jha as Motorola Mobility CEO
Google has selected Dennis Woodside to be the new CEO of Motorola Mobility, replacing Sanjay Jha, according to three people speaking to Bloomberg. Woodside is a Google executive who led the company's ad business in North America before overseeing the Google/Motorola Mobility merger.
The deal was recently approved by both the European Commission and the U.S. Department of Justice, so it makes sense that these decisions are being made now.
From the beginning of the acquisition, Google has insisted that Motorola Mobility will remain an independent entity. Google and Motorola Mobility have yet to issue an official announcement.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 7 Plus gets a bugfix update
The Samsung Galaxy Tab 7 Plus Android tablet has a small bugfix update available. No real idea of what's new, other than "software and stability improvements," but the update takes half of forever to apply, which is a little surprising given that it's only a 19.38-megabyte download. We'll keep an ear out for any real deets on this one. Otherwise, head into the settings and get your update on.

'Breaking Dawn' DVD Sells 3.2 Million In Two Days
'Part 1' of 'Twilight' finale also racks up 50,000 downloads and 80,000 video-on-demand transactions.

"The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1 DVD is, unsurprisingly, flying off the shelves. After the film was released to disc at midnight Saturday morning, it reportedly sold 3.2 million discs over the course of two days.
But, that's not all: The flick also snagged 50,000 downloads and 80,000 video-on-demand transactions during the two-day period when the sales were tracked, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The numbers make "Breaking Dawn" the top-selling release so far this year. It bows at #1 on the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert overall disc sales chart, followed by "Lady and the Tramp" and "A Very Harold and Kumar Christmas."
Now that it can be played on repeat, Twihards are certain to be memorizing every sweet and saucy moment of "Part 1" before the final installment hits theaters this November. A scene from the Bill Condon-directed "Breaking Dawn - Part 2," played at a special Target in-store event just before "Part 1" dropped.
Fans were treated to five minutes of footage, including behind-the-scenes shots of "Twilight" hunks Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner preparing for battle in the woods. The exclusive scene followed Bella as she finds a note in a book with instructions from Alice, explaining what to do to get new passports.
The clip then cut to an emotional conversation between Edward and Bella, who share a juicy kiss. But, perhaps the scene fans most wanted to sink their teeth into was the first shot of vampire Bella, which included those famous red eyes and special-effects-aided speed.

Whitney Houston's Death Won't Halt 'Waiting To Exhale' Sequel
'It's almost in her honor that we think to soldier on,' Fox executive says.

Those of you who have been patiently waiting for a "Waiting to Exhale" sequel since falling in love with the original in 1995 might soon have a reason to "Exhale" again, despite the tragic death of co-star Whitney Houston.
According to New York magazine's Vulture blog, Fox wants to make something positive of the tragedy and is planning on moving forward with the project in honor of Houston.
"I don't think she would want it to [be shelved]," Fox 2000 Pictures president Elizabeth Gabler told . "It's almost in her honor that we think to soldier on."
Gabler, who worked on the original film, said the feel-good movie about four middle-class African-American women dealing with love and loss in the suburbs was a ground-breaker.
"This was the biggest barrier-buster for color lines," she said. "[Audiences] practically tore the theater down; we couldn't get them to leave. All these young women in their twenties and thirties wanted to stay and talk about what they'd just seen: Suburban women drinking Chablis who weren't living in the projects or stuck in gangs."
The studio picked up the rights to "Exhale" author Terry McMillan's sequel, "Getting to Happy," and has reportedly placed the film on a fast track of sorts, making plans to hire new writers to work on the script under the supervision of the original film's director, Forest Whitaker.
Although nobody has been approached about taking over Houston's role, Gabler mentioned the possibility of "Exhale" supporter Oprah Winfrey coming on-board either to produce or potentially be in the film.
"We literally have not talked about anybody for that part," Gabler said. "Forest, I know, is just ... grieving. He'd been the one who was speaking with her, updating [Houston] on its progress."
Although Houston's co-stars have not yet commented on their intentions to continue plans with the sequel, they did express their extreme sadness upon hearing the news of their friend and former co-star's death.
"I am so thankful to have been enveloped by the warmth of Whitney's great talents. They were undeniable and vast," Angela Bassett said in a statement. "Whatever her burdens, she has at last laid them down and picked up instead a crown. For truly, she was and will ever be for us — who were so captivated by her strengths — unparalleled."
"I am overwhelmed. I cannot wrap my mind around this. I missed the chance to see her at a party this past Thursday and when we spoke last she had just finished 'Sparkle' and she told me how excited she was to start production on 'Waiting to Exhale 2' with Angela, Lela [Rochon] and myself," Loretta Devine said. "My prayers go out to her family and I am so honored for the time I spent working with her on 'Waiting to Exhale,' 'The Preacher's Wife' and on 'Boston Public.' I love you, Whitney, and I will miss your easy laugh."
Share your condolences with Whitney's family and friends on our Facebook page.

Google counting down, building up to Mobile World Congress
You didn't really think Google would have just any old countdown page for Mobile World Congress, did you? And instead of saying Google's counting down to MWC, it looks more like el Goog is building up to MWC. What you see above is where we stand as of Feb. 17, and just below is a little slider that goes from a blank canvas to what should be a fully formed Android extravaganza.
Google's not going to half-ass its MWC presence, that's for sure. Last year there were smoothies of every major version flavor (well, most of them anyway), a two-story slide, and more developers than we could shake a stick at. It was magical.

'Walking Dead' Season Two Is All About 'Escalation'
Finding Sophia "kicks things off in a big way," writer Robert Kirkman tells MTV News.

Killing zombies is no walk in the park. But harder still is killing your fellow man. Former sheriff Rick Grimes knows this all too well: In the most recent episode of "The Walking Dead," titled "Nebraska," our gun-slinging hero put down two hot-blooded humans with two well-placed pistol shots, all because they posed a potential threat to his family and friends.
For Rick, killing these two travelers was just another step forward on the bloody path he's been walking since the series first began — and he's not the only one embracing his inner darkness. Indeed, the death of poor Sophia in the "Walking Dead" midseason finale was just the start of a shift in momentum toward a deadlier, faster-paced string of episodes, where each and every one of the show's characters will find themselves tested.
"I think the loss of Sophia and looking for Sophia was a big thing that anchored the entire story of the first half of our second season," executive producer Robert Kirkman told MTV News about what to look forward to in the rest of season two. "For them to find her in that last episode in such a way, it puts a button on that group of episodes and opens the world up for the next half of the season. It kicks things off in a big way. Finding Sophia is the beginning of an escalation that brings us all the way to the very end of the second season. People are going to begin to see that escalation over the next several episodes."
Shown runner Glen Mazzara agrees with Kirkman, adding that Rick and Hershel are taking the death of Sophia especially hard. "When Hershel sees his family coming out of that barn, he realizes he's been mistaken about everything he believed," he told MTV News. "Rick also loses hope. Those two men have to figure out how to lead the group."
But there's another outlier in the mix: Shane Walsh, the disgruntled ex-cop who's losing more respect for Rick and becoming increasingly dangerous with each passing day.
"Shane doesn't agree with either one of them, and he wants to take control of the group," Mazzara said. "It really puts pressure on all of the characters in an interpersonal way that really makes the show incredibly exciting, to find out what's going to happen and who's going to lead that group."

Best handwriting notes app for iPad: Noteshelf review
"Whether you're a student or teacher, an intern or executive, if you have an iPad and you take notes, get Noteshelf."
Noteshelf is currently the best way to take and share handwritten notes on the iPad. Why would you want to do that? Well, we live in a digital world and it's become much, much easier to carry a single, multifunctional iPad around than a heavy stack of books, grocery lists, calendars, journals, notebooks, scrap papers, sketchbooks, and stickies. Sure, the iPad comes with a keyboard based Notes app built in, but there's still something to said about writing by hand. Call it therapeutic. Call it efficient. Call it necessary. There are simply more things to take note of than are currently possible with a keyboard alone.Q and A with Jari-Matti Latvala
